Asking for help

Dear Friends,

I have been trying to get started with this fund-raising effort for the last few months. But every time I sit down to think about how to proceed, I get stuck. I just can't figure out where to start.

I was wondering if you can help me with this.

You are welcome to post your ideas and comments on this blog. You can also send me an email at subhabrata.ganguli@gmail.com.

Thanks,
Suvo

  1. I personally think there are several NGOs in our country which deal with rampant social evils that are tearing the fabric of our nation apart(girl child education, gender inequality, unsafe drinking water, poverty and malnutrition etc to name a few) and they are doing pretty substantial amount of work in this regard.
I went through the links of past and present projects of the RKM and personally I am a little disappointed - because their area of focus is way different from my areas of interest and focus(with some minimal areas of overlap). However, I would like to help you in your endeavor because I sincerely believe you`re working for a good cause.
Fund-raising events can be plenty. Organize contests with an entry fees - something that will interest the general public. Involve the youth at the UMN. The other day I saw posters put up at the ISSS(at UMN) about a photo contest and there were hundreds of entries.
You can organize a music concert(you know people who can sing exceptionally well in any genre - bangla adhunik, rabindra sangeet, western, indian classical). You can hold a 'Festival of nations' with good food, good music etc etc. You can also go the regular route by selling good stuff (cards made of recycled paper, cakes etc etc) - but this is too tedious and the amounts raised is too less. These are just some ideas off the top of my head. I`ll come back with more substantive ones. But the bottom line is that you need to do a good publicity. Invest some amount in flyers and posters etc. Otherwise no one will come to know about the cause.
Ok I will stop for now :):) I know I`ve gone on endlessly. And even though personally I`m not too excited about the cause, it is very, very heartening to see people actually do their bit to make this a better world! So I will definitely help any which way I can.

  2. Thank you for posting!

I really do appreciate your input on this. As you may have guessed, I have never done this before. Not only that, I don't even have any opinion about prioritizing various possible focus areas in this context.

The wide variety of choices which you suggested tells me you are very capable in this domain.

I appreciate your offer for help - in fact, I am banking on offers like this from friends.

I am planning to think through the ideas you suggested over this weekend. I'd to get back to you after that.

I am also curious to learn why you think some of the past and present projects of RKM are disappointing, if you'd like to share at some point.

    Thanks,
    Suvo
